Case Study: Secure Embedded Linux Nodes for Smart Building Automation

April 28, 2025

Customer Challenge: Protecting Smart Building Infrastructure

Modern smart buildings rely heavily on connected sensors, actuators, and control nodes. But these systems are vulnerable to cybersecurity threats. Without properly secured devices, physical access to embedded nodes could lead to serious breaches. A company building such smart buildings needed a secure, scalable platform that would allow them to focus on their application software, without worrying about device-level security.

Sintecs developed a flexible, security-hardened embedded Linux edge node for smart building environments. These nodes manage customer defined scenarios for controlling sensors and actuators, aggregating and packing control data across a major downtown development. It allowed customer to maintain a quick and flexible cycle of development and delivery of the latest features without compromising strong security and reliability.

Key Security Measures

Holistic approach to product cybersecurity lead us to employ a wide range of available hardening tools and techniques in our solutions:

  • NXP SoC Processors expertise of Sintecs allowed leveraging Layerscape processors‘ advanced cybersecurity features.
  • Secure Boot guaranteed that only Sintecs-signed firmware can operate on the devices.
  • Confidential Boot allows encrypting firmware to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Regular Firmware Updates helped to ensure that devices stay secure and up-to-date.
  • Customized Linux Tuning was used with advanced security settings.
  • Docker Containerization made possible isolating customer applications both for improved system security and customer convenience.

To support secure and scalable deployment, Sintecs integrated Azure IoT Edge for streamlined application rollout across smart building devices. Mender.io enabled seamless OTA firmware updates and remote monitoring, ensuring devices remained secure and up-to-date. A custom management platform provided role-based access, advanced logging, and remote debugging, making large-scale device management simple and reliable.

Business Impact

The fully hardened firmware passed a third-party security audit, validating Sintecs’ complete end-to-end approach to cybersecurity. After the project was completed, the partner of Sintecs was able to gain the following benefits:

Faster Deployment. Customers started launching their solutions quicker with pre-secured devices.

Simplified Maintenance. Automated secure OTA updates and remote management minimized operational overhead.

Accelerated Scaling: Sintecs’ technical support enabled rapid adoption across smart building infrastructures.
